WHAT IS ADOBE CAPTURE AND HOW TO USE IT?

what is adobe capture

You stopped here because you wish to know what is Adobe Capture and how to use it?

In this blog post, we are going to focus on this amazing free app from Adobe called: Capture.

So, know that Adobe Capture is available to download on iOs and Android!

Let’s dive right into what is Adobe Capture?

1- WHAT IS ADOBE CAPTURE?

So, with the Adobe Capture app, you can create amazing color palettes, patterns, vector shapes, 3D materials, and more, right into your phone!!

If you are an Adobe Creative Cloud member you will be able to save all of the assets you created to your cloud library and start using them in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fresco.

Here is how Adobe Present their App:

“Adobe Capture gives you the power to create production-ready color themes, patterns, vector-based shapes, 3D materials, type, and custom brushes—all from a single photo. Whether you are on the go or at work in the studio, you can gather inspiration from the world around you into Libraries to share and use in your favorite Adobe desktop or mobile apps.

2- HOW TO USE CAPTURE?

So, sounds obvious but first, you will have to download the app!

Then, you need either a free or paid Creative Cloud membership. If you are not already a member, you can sign up for a free Creative Cloud membership.

Once this is done, you’re in!

So, now let’s look at everything you can do with the app and how to use it.

Ps: You can find the deeper explanation directly on the Adobe site.

Materials

Texture surrounds you, and Capture lets you select the best to work with. Use your phone as a texture generator to create high-quality PBR materials with a few clicks.

AKA: 3D elements that can only be used in Adobe Dimension.

Type

So, Capture uses Adobe Sensei to analyze the shapes of your text to suggest similar typefaces that can be saved as character styles.

Once you save a type in Capture, it is automatically activated in Adobe Fonts. Fonts are available immediately via the type tools in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, or XD.

To use is, simply to take the picture of the type you are interested in knowing with your phone directly into the app.

Shapes

From hand-drawn shapes to high contrast photos, you can turn any image into a clean vector shape.

You can use the refining tools to remove clutter, clean backgrounds, or smooth lines.

So, when you are done, send those shapes directly to Photoshop and Illustrator, or find them in your Cloud Library.

Colors

The one is probably my favorite.

So, point your lens around you and let Capture’s color harmonizing engine find compatible palettes in your surroundings.

Save your swatches for immediate use in almost every application. Further, customize, and share your palettes on Adobe Color.

Looks

The one is interesting and I don’t use it quite enough.

With Looks, you can Capture light and color from all around you, or your imported images, and use that to generate cohesive color profiles for your images and video in Adobe applications.

Patterns

Create unique patterns!

Capture can generate various kaleidoscopic effects from your images. Blur the edges to create repeating tiles.

Save patterns as raster or generate resizable vectors from your picture.

Then send your patterns to Photoshop or Illustrator to refine or use as fills, textures, and more.

Brushes

You are able to create high-quality custom brushes direct from photos.

Choose your brush style, direction, flow, and behavior.

Make texturizing brushes direct from textures, and create ribbon brushes with a smooth action.

Use them to paint in Animate, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Fresco.

The meaning of branding for small businesses

1- WHAT IS BRANDING?

So, I think the first thing we need to talk about is “branding”.

You probably know what’s a brand right? If you see the M of Mc Donald’s, you know who they are and what they do thanks to their logo. That is their “brand”.

Now, if you look at Mc Donald colors, typography, tagline, and packaging, that is “BRANDING”

Basically, branding is the way your target audience recognizes your brand thanks to different assets.

So, what are those assets?

2- WHAT ARE BRAND ASSETS?

There are a lot of things incorporated in Branding, but here are some examples.

As a small business, to have a strong brand identity, you will need:

  • Primary logo: That is the logo that includes any logo mark, logotype but also taglines. This is considered a more “formal” presentation.
  • Secondary Logo: This logo is another variation of the primary logo. It will be displayed on most consumer-focused products/services.
  • Text Only Logo: This format works well where the logo mark or symbol cannot be used.
  • Icon or Brand Mark: Used when the consumer is already aware of the company name. (also used as watermark)
  • Responsive Logo: This one is used for super small areas like mobile headers, social media profile pictures, etc.
  • Color Palette: Strong 3 to 5 Primary colors to represents your businesses model and voice.
  • Typography: Come up with a typography system by always using the same type and fonts. Up to two different types.

2- WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO BRAND MY BUSINESS?

Well, if you did all the basics and wish to do even more, here is what you can start working on:

  • Packaging: for product-based businesses! How awesome to have packaging that incorporates your business colors, fonts, and logo?
  • Business Cards
  • Thank you Cards
  • Flyers
  • Social Media Templates: You must be aware of how important social media platforms are for your business. They are really powerful lead generators for your products or services. So, one of the things you can do is designing social media posts that using all of your brand assets.
  • Digital stickers and Gifs

But, Instagram made it clear that Reels are now essential for your growth on the platform.

So, if like me, Instagram is where you find your clients and show off projects, here are my 8 Instagram Reels Ideas for Graphic Designers.

Let’s go!

8 Instagram Reels ideas for Graphic designers

2- BEHIND THE SCENE OF THE DESIGN

This one is easy!

Show your computer screen, and explain quickly what you are working on.

3- YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGN PROCESS

So, basically in this Instagram Reels, you are going to explain your Graphic design process from onboarding to finish.

You do not have to show your face, you can make really nice animated design or background videos with animated text!

4- INQUIRY AND INFORMATION

Alright, this one is a little tricky for my “shy” designers.

I encourage you to show your face on this one, even if you are not very comfortable.

If you want prospects to get to your Inquiry Form or to contact you, they need to be comfortable/confident by seeing your face!

It will be easier for clients to work with you if they can see the face behind the design!

So, introduce yourself, talk, and show them where they can contact you.

5- QUICK PORTFOLIO

So, this one is fun!

That is a little challenging but we love a good challenge.

Try to show off as many Graphic Design projects as possible in less than 30 seconds.

Good luck and have fun!

6- EDUCATE YOUR AUDIENCE

Now, if Graphic Design doesn’t have any secrets for you, it is still a big mystery for others out there.

So, start by educating your audience on Graphic design terms, techniques, history, and psychology.

7- REVIEW AND TESTIMONIAL

So, The best way to land a client for a new project is to show off what you’ve done in the past and what the satisfied client said about you and your work.

Easy, start the Instagram reels by showing the work you’ve done and then make a transition with what the client said!

BOOM!

8- BEFORE AND AFTER

I will never get old of watching “before and after” Reels.

For like any subjects or industry. It is so satisfying to watch something changed for the better.

So, do the same with your work.

Now, there are two ways to do this.

First, show your graphic design work when you started (like the sketch) and make the transition to the finished project.

Second, show what your client was working with before he hired you and then show how you transformed his brand, logo, poster, and so on.

2- MY GO-TO GRAPHIC ASSETS: MOCKUPS

So, the first go-to graphic asset I always search for is Mockups!

In manufacturing and design, a mockup, or mock-up, is a scale or full-size model of a design or device, used for teaching, demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and other purposes. A mockup may be a prototype if it provides at least part of the functionality of a system and enables testing of a design.

3- DITAL ASSETS GO-TO: SOCIAL MEDIA TEMPLATES

Alright, the second go-to graphic asset I always search for is Social Media Templates.

And, I stop you here! I know what you must think.

Why are you not making your own social media templates as a graphic designer? Well, my short answer is TIME.

As a Graphic designer, you have multiple accounts to take care of and a lot of Graphic design templates to create for your clients.

Of course, one of them is Icons! But not only.

I also look for Illustrations, Painting,s and any other little graphic I can need!

HOW TO MAKE A CONTENT CALENDAR USING NOTION

how to make a content calendar using notion

You stopped here because you want to know how to make a content calendar using notion.

What is Notion?

Notion is an application that provides components such as notes, databases, kanban boards, wikis, calendars, and reminders. Users can connect these components to create their own systems for knowledge management, note-taking, data management, project management, among others.

Today, we are going to use Notion to make a content calendar.

I am going to share all my secrets, to stay organized with my Instagram posts, youtube videos, and blog posts.

Alright, let’s dive right into how to make a content calendar using Notion.

how to make a content calendar using notion

1- CREATE A NEW PAGE IN NOTION

So, the first thing you need to do is to create a new page in your Notion.

If you already have a page created and you want your content to be inside this page, simply add a page inside this page.

At this point just rename your page whatever your want.

I named mine: CONTENT

So, the cool thing about Notion is that you can customize everything.

Be crazy and creative, add a cover picture to the page and an emoji to your title.

Envato Elements

Ready to use Graphic Assets

Start Now

2- ADD YOUR BLOCKS

Alright, there are multiple ways you can do this.

Obviously, first, you will have to add a block.

You can start by adding a calendar block if it’s what you like to work with.

However, I know a better way.

So, instead of starting with a calendar block, start with a table inline-block.

In the first line on your table, you are going to create different properties.

Here is how made mine:

  • Publishing Date: Property Date
  • Content Title: Property text
  • Social media Platform: Property Multi-select
  • Start working on it: Property Date
  • To Do: Property Multi-select
  • Notes: Property text
  • Completed: Property Check box

3- MULTIPLE VIEWS

Another cool thing about Notion is that you can add multiple views to the same block.

So, if you added your table list like mine and you also wanted to see this list with the dates on a calendar, YOU CAN!

To do so, go into the little arrow close to your block title (not the page, the block).

From there, you will have the option to add a calendar view, and you will be able to switch between the views.

Cool right?

Thank you so much for reading about how to make a content calendar using Notion.

What do you do? how do you start?

Today, I wanted to walk through this with you.

So, let’s get right into how to start with Canva for newbies.

HOW TO START WITH CANVA FOR NEWBIES

1- CANVA - THE BASIC

So, the first thing you will see when signing up on your account is “home”.

Each home will be different from one another since Canva loves to share what’s appropriate to your liking.

If you are using the free version on Canva, don’t mind what’s on the side in the home section.

Things like “Brand kit, content planning and team” are Canva Pro only.

So, how to start with Canva?

My best advice is to forget the fluff.

You are in Canva to make some quick and easy designs.

So, I suggest you start directly by creating a design in the top right corner.

When you do so, you will be asked to choose between the suggested size.

For example, do you want to make an Instagram Post? a Youtube Thumbnail? It’s already premade for you.

If you do not see the size in the premade template, you can always custom your size or even start by adding a picture from your computer.

2- CANVA - THE EDIT PROCESS

Once you chose your canvas size, you will be brought to another window.

This is where the editing process beginning.

So, what are all of those things on the side?

Template

So, in this example, I chose an Instagram Post.

Canva will share with me some pre-made Instagram posts made by other designers.

Some are free and some are for Pro Canva users only.

If you decide to use one of the free templates, select it!

You can make it your own by changing colors, fonts, and any kind of pictures/elements.

HOW TO START WITH CANVA FOR NEWBIES

Elements

So, elements are by far my favorite.

If you haven’t chosen a template and want to make a design from scratch, you can start with the elements.

Elements regroup:

  • Lines and shapes
  • Graphics
  • Photos and videos stock
  • Audio
  • Charts
  • Frame
  • Grids

To bring an element to your canvas simply drag and drop!

Some of those elements are free, some are for Canva Pro users only.

Uploads

So, this one is pretty self-explanatory!

This is where you can upload your own images and videos.

You have the ability to start recording yourself right into the app!

HOW TO START WITH CANVA FOR NEWBIES

Texts

Need some texts in your design? no problem!

Canva offers a lot of free fonts to use.

You will even have access to pre-made font combinations.

So, same as the elements, drag and drop into your design.

3- QUICK CANVA TIPS

Before you get on your designs, I wanted to leave you with some quick tips for editing.

1- Everything you will add to your canvas will be editable. This means you will be able to change colors, fonts, shapes, and more.

2- Positions: when you click on your image or text or element. You can position it forward or backward.

3- Animations: You can add animations to your design. It is possible to animate the entire page or only a couple of elements.

If you wish to learn more about Canva, there is a couple of really cool classes on Skillshare! Give it a try.

MY BRANDING DESIGN PROCESS

my branding design process

Let’s talk about my branding design process!

In this blog post, I wanted to take the time to explain what happens when you decide to work with me.

So, branding your business is a big deal, this is why it’s important you understand what you are paying for!

Alright, let’s dive deep into my branding design process.

my branding design process

1- ENQUIRY FORM + PHONE CALL

So, the first step in the process is the Enquiry form!

If you wish to work with me, you will have to answer a couple of questions I added in my Enquiry Form.

equiry form design by justine lamer

Once you’ve entered your information, I will review them.

From there, you will receive an email from me to schedule our phone call.

So, during our phone call, we will talk a lot about you and your business.

I will ask you some more questions about your goals, design styles, and more.

2- FINDING DIRECTION

Let’s start by identifying the design style following the brief.

I will put together 2 one page design inspirations to help you discover which design style you feel most connected to.

Those two mood boards will have deep explanations on imagery, colors, and typography chosen.

You won’t be lost and will understand my choices perfectly.

3- BRAINSTORMING AND SKETCHING

So, this step is made for me only!

Basically, I will generate as many ideas that adhere to the agreed-upon style.

So, based on the research previously made, I will brainstorm and start sketching logo designs.

4- CONCEPT SELECTION

So, once the best of my sketches is chosen, it is time to digitize them into workable vector objects.

I will send you 2 to 3 different logo design ideas in black and white.

Why black and white? So, you can focus on the concept, not on the colors.

Once the concept is chosen, I will start making tweaks and changes.

This is when your dream branding comes to life.

5- DEVELOPPING A BRANDING SYSTEM

Once the logo concept is approved, and I have an overall style direction.

I can start picking typography pairing, color palette, color combination, and other supporting brand assets.

6- PRESENTATION & DELIVERABLES

The last step is to create and send the final files in CMYK, RGB pdf, jpg, png & more.

I will send you a brand presentation and brand guidelines Manual.

BRAND PRESENTATION

is a PDF document with a heavy description of the reasons “why” and talking about how the design can support the overall company story.

BRAND GUIDELINES MANUAL

is a multiple-page document that outlines how to use the brand on a wide variety of assets.

It will outline the “do’s and don’ts” for the company’s new design.

FINAL FILES

All your files will be sent thanks to a sharing folder on OneDrive!

You will get:

  • CMYK, RGB & Pantone colors.
  • PDF, PNG, JPG, SVG, and EPS file.

Thank you so much for reading about my branding design process!
