Indeed, Canva is such an amazing tool, and it’s FREE.
Therefore, in this blog post, I will teach you how you can make your free Instagram highlight cover using a Canva template, and how to create one from scratch.
Let’s dive right into it:
1- CREATE YOUR FREE CANVA ACCOUNT
Here is how:
So, if you already have a Canva account, you can skip this part.
However, if you are totally new and don’t know anything about Canva, follow those steps.
1- Go to www.canva.com
2- Sign up with Facebook, Google or any other email
3- Create your free account, follow the steps.
2- INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVERS
From Template:
So, the first real step here is to go into the Canva search bar and search for “Instagram highlight cover”
There, you will have access to hundreds of different Instagram highlight covers made by amazing creators.
Those templates are free to use and to edit!
So, choose the one you love the most, and let’s start editing.

3- EDIT YOUR INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVER FOR FREE
Here is how:
So, once you have selected the template of your choice, and clicked on it. You will have access to a lot of different “covers” from that template.
Here, if you click on one of these covers, you will see that you are able to edit them!
Now, You can, change the color of the background, and choose the color of your brand.
So, start to edit as your liking! You can even switch elements!
4- INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHT COVER FOR FREE FROM SCRATCH
So, if you feel creative and adventurous, you can make your Instagram Highlight covers from scratch.
Here is how:
In this case, you will have to click on “create a design” in the top right corner in Canva.
Here, select “Instagram Story”. Your Instagram highlight cover needs to be the size of an Instagram story.
After, choose a background for your highlight cover.
So, it can be, a plain color, a photo as well as some patterns. Whatever you feel like.Â

So, on the left side, you have a lot of things you can work with.
One of my favorites is “element”
So, click on the elements.
In the search bar, search for Abstract shapes.
If you are using the free version of Canva, you can filter those elements to see only the free one. It makes things faster and easier.
6- BE CREATIVE
